FLICK OFF MANIFESTO

"We have at most ten years—not ten years to decide upon action, but ten years to alter fundamentally the trajectory of global greenhouse emissions.” Jim Hansen, NASA.

FLICK OFF is a movement to fight climate change by getting Canadians to use less energy. We need you! Time is short to prevent a climate crisis, but it hasn’t run out—so join the FLICK OFF movement. How? Click here!

1.    Check out our site to learn more about global warming
2.    Flick off stuff every chance you get
3.    Register so you can get regular updates
4.    Tell everyone you know to FLICK OFF
5.    Enter the FLICKFEST contest

The more we all FLICK OFF, the bigger the difference we’ll make. Here’s why: we burn fossil fuels for energy. But that releases huge amounts of greenhouse gases. Those greenhouse gases? Well, they came by their name honestly, and they're heating up our planet. The biggest culprits? Coal for electricity, and oil for fuel.

Why FLICK OFF?  It’s simple. The less energy we use, the fewer greenhouse gases we emit.

So let's get going—by using all the alternative energy we can, and by reducing greenhouse gases through energy conservation. The reality is, we waste energy like crazy; we use old, crappy, inefficient technology; and we are the undisputed energy gluttons of the world.

FLICK OFF is going to change that. By getting people to make changes, every day. By getting people to talk about our planet—how we use it, how we abuse it, and what solutions we have.

We’re in this mess together, and we need to fix it. So please, FLICK OFF. The more you do it, the cooler it gets. (The planet, that is.)

ever since FLICK OFF launched last year, i have been biking to work everyday. it's such a good feeling to get my heart rate going in the morning. not only that, but it's quicker than taking the subway or a taxi. not only that, but it doesn't do a single thing to the environment. not only that, i get fresh air. and not only that, but it's faster than walking. biking to work. i highly recommend it.

Earth Hour was great, but we need to remember that the Earth deserves more than an hour of our consideration. This site is an amazing resource. I keep coming back for tips on how to conserve... my goal is to not only lessen my environmental footprint but also to save money. Bonus!

We are proud supporters of FLICK OFF. We were always a little environmental- we recycled, turned off lights, etc. But lately, since we joined a school environmental group and formed Light Wise, we've really become passionate about the cause. We've just been sponsored by BC Hydro (gave us 250 pckgs of CFL's- compact flourescent light bulbs) and are selling them at 3 for five dollars- that's half the retail price. Not only are we enjoying it, but we are also getting a jet load of support from our friends and family. We also recieved the action packs but sadly we could not use the stickers because our teachers said they resembled the F word (our only complaint). Our last word- UP YOURS! LMAO!!

Is it a fluke that you haven't heard of FLICK OFF until now? Please tell me Virgin Mobile generally makes an active effort to promote FLICK OFF to it's customers and employees...

I am a regular highschool kid trying to make my way through life. I'm an 85+ average student who's enthusiastic about the arts. In english class I recently wrote a speech of my choice where I had do cause my audience to adopt an idea. I used this organization as a negative example. I would like to state that in no way shape or form am I against this movement of trying to clean up our earth, but the way this organization has chosen to do it is rediculous. You have created an organization that in the eyes of some people, does "flick off" the likeability factor. Simply stated, your organization's title is a profanity. I don't care what excuse you use to back it up, plain and simple, the idea behing it is a profanity. I don't know who came up with this title but they should have been smart enough to notice that it would cause some contreversy. I know that the "F-Bomb" is no longer lightly used in our society, but i can guarantee you that if you knocked on every door on your street and used that word to introduce yourself, you wouldn't get a posative reaction. Titles like "Who needs to flick off?" or my personal favorite "Go flick yourself" don't create a posative reaction in the eyes of certain people. Like Al-Gore, this organization uses fear to drive people into wanting to change, but it uses fear for the wrong reason. Statistics are exaggerated which doesn't make me want to believe everything you say. Again, I love the idea of protecting our earth, but please, next time someone comes up with a "brilliant idea" like this one, please, keep it PG.

Countless statistics state that a North American is exposed to over 1500 (some reports even list upwards of 3000) advertising messages on any given day. In order to attract the eyes of a passerby and avoid getting lost in the daily clutter, messages need to stand out. They need to be seen and remembered. Above all, they need to cause a reaction. I completely agree with you that global warming is a cause that demands the public eye; it demands urgency. I also understand why some people are offended by FLICK OFF. However, there's no doubt in my mind that the people who created FLICK OFF knew it would cause some controversy, and I think it was extremely smart of them to use this to their benefit. FLICK OFF is getting noticed. It's making a stir. Most importantly, it's starting conversations. FLICK OFF grabbed your attention didn't it?
