WHAT YOU CAN DO

WHAT YOU CAN DOWHAT YOU CAN DO

THINK ABOUT YOUR LIFESTYLE FOR JUST A SECOND.

Do you drive a car every single day? Do you choose your own lightbulbs and appliances? Do you control your thermostat? This is where you start. We don't all live in cookie-cutter homes, and work in cubicles, but you can bet your life that there's a part everyone can play in the action that needs to be taken. So we say take public transit more often, but there's no system in your town? Then take it one bit further. Try carpooling. Ride a bike. Turn this stuff around so it applies to you. There are so many little things you can do to lessen your impact on the planet. Why not make that impact light and temporary? Everything you do has a direct and traceable repercussion, so get informed. There's no excuse.

As much as we need all need to do our own part in solving this problem, ultimately it's up to the people in power to get a system set up so that it's easier for people to participate AND to set up an alternative energy infrastructure. We could list a zillion things about what each individual can do to prevent global warming, but in reality, 'big business' and many industrialized nations are just not interested yet. Education on solar panels and other technologies is a must for this to succeed. What is a riding a bike or turning off your computer when there's tons and tons more vehicles being produced every year, as well as developing nations using carbon and other polluting technologies as their infrastructure? Don't get me wrong, everything helps and I'm not trying to be a pessimist, but in the end we need a complete infrastructure make over for things to really work out for us.

I think we need to remember tho that "big business" doesn't just make products, mine for coal and produce oil for the heck of it. They produce it to feed our demand for it. So the solution is in our hands... it's in our ability to drive less, to buy less, to use those items they create in a dirty and unsustainable way less and less. The power to make a difference is in our hands so long as we are the consumer. If we create a demand for solar panels, alternative energy and the like then that is what they will produce. No business is in the business of losing money. So the less we demand, the less they make, the cleaner our environment. It just makes sense.

i went to play hockey this morning at varsity arena in toronto. i go into the locker room and the shower was running! we were the first ones on the ice this morning, so i guarantee that no one was showering before us. that means it had probably been running all night. and you think an hour shower is bad? someone's gotta get this guys running varsity arena to wake up! i would normally suggest a cold shower, but somehow it seems inappropriate...

Sometimes when I see a container on the ground and theres a garbage near by or I'm heading into a building I pick up the trash and put it in the garbage. Nothing big but if everyone did it, we would have no litter at all (almost).

honestly if every one did wat shes protesting our earth would b soo much cleaner, i also think that havin all cabs be turned into hybrids that it would save a lot not only the planet by decreasing gas emissions, but the money they spend on filling up the cabs therefore maybe the cost of cabs would decrease as well.

Hey all! I am working on setting up a school event in support of fighting Global Warming, but I'm not sure what exactly we can do. We want to do some presentations that high-school students would enjoy and aren't sure what to do. Also, is it possible to find a speaker that can do a presentation? I'm from Winnipeg and can't seem to find anyone to present. Anyways, I would greatly appreciate some help! TTYL!

Hey BookJunkie91,

Great to hear you are flicking off! Have you looked around the site? It has lots of great tips on things you can do at home, school and at the store. Also on the site, under http://www.flickoff.org/freebies, are pamphlets that are full of tips to cut your energy consumption. You could hand them out in classroom.

Have you entered the contest? It is a great way to learn how to reduce your emissions. Encourage your friends to participate and maybe your community will win the FlickFest Concert! Check it out at http://www.flickoff.org/carbon_contest_start.

Please let us know what you are doing by posting to the site. We would love to hear about your progress.

I don't know if you've heard of it, but switch your homepage to www.blackle.com. It's made by and just like Google, but it's completely black, thus saving energy. It's already saved something like 200 000 watts already. Another site is www.global-cool.com, where it has a bunch of tips on how to save energy and water. It also has CoolTube, similar to Youtube but has a bunch of celebrities talking about climate change and what we can do. Another site is flood.firetree.net. It's shows what the earth will look like if water levels rise up to 14 metres. And trust me, it's freaky. These are just three sites... There's so many more. :D

I agree these things help prevent global warming, and I think it is really important to try and take it a step further and redesign our lives so we don't depend on highly consumptive ways of living (for example, figure out how you can live without owning your own motor vehicle).

Thanks for sharing the resource!
