GLOBAL WARMING

GLOBAL WARMINGGLOBAL WARMING

Climate change means any long-term, significant change in the weather patterns of an area.

A BRIEF EXPLANATION

It's okay if you don't know what global warming is. Bluntly, it's defined as an increase in global temperatures due to the greenhouse effect. Global warming is a measure of climate change.

THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT

Here’s the basic setup:

Sun rays shine on the planet and enter our atmosphere. Our atmosphere retains some of that heat, thanks to naturally occurring greenhouse gases like water vapour, carbon dioxide and methane which trap the heat in. The reason we don't overheat is that the Arctic, Antarctica and other frozen surfaces act like a mirror, reflecting a good part of the sun's rays back into space.

But since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, humans have been pumping massive amounts of heat-trapping gases into our atmosphere, causing the planet to warm up.

The ice has started melting and we are losing our mirror. There is 32% more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere today than there was at the start of the Industrial era.1

Earth has become much warmer over the past 150 years.

It's scary because In the 100,000 years that humans have been wandering about, the planet has never been more than a degree or two warmer than it is today. But this influx of greenhouse gases will mean a rise in temperature between 1.8 and 4 degrees over the next century. And that's a modest estimate.

The effects of global warming will be complex. And, they'll extend further than we might like to think.

i wonder what we could do to help eliminate global warming if every north american gave "$1 dollar " power in numbers

So what lucky people would you give those millions to?? Greenpeace already brings in about $165,000,000.00 a year. Just the Canadian branch of the World Wildlife Fund paid its staff and top executives almost $5 million last year alone.

Instead of just spouting out numbers, please provide us with a link to the sites from which you gained your information. Also, just because Greenpeace already brings in hundreds of millions of dollars a year, doesn't mean their causes wouldn't benefit from additional funds. Consequently, it doesn't mean they will. Although the more funds backing such an important movement in the world today, the more likely we'll gain the results we're after. A healthier planet will benefit us all.

...So we've been beaten over the head with all the little 'Al Gore'isms' we can do to make a difference yet nothing is changing. Taking public transit, the 3 R's (reduce, reuse, recycle), more energy efficient light bulbs and appliances, car pools, even 'Flicking Off'. As much as I believe these are the right things to do, they don not change the problem at all. When we break down all our biggest Earthly problems like Global Warming, Pollution, Energy, Over Fishing, whatever it is - the lowest common denominator is always Population. The only way to actually deal with these problems is population control. Quite simply put, there are too many of us draining our resources. 'Flicking Off' may be a cute catch phrase and do some good, but if you really want to get to heart of the matter, try increasing the availability of Birth Control (especially in 3rd world countries), more family planning education, accepting and welcoming the modern gay family and at some point we are going to have to seriously consider putting a cap on family size (I know that sounds scary). At the end of the day the enviornment is not the problem > we are

You're right in regards to the overpopulation in this world. Perhaps we need a system that directs its enery to the many problems of global warming in the school systems. It's the best way to engage people- especially the youths- in global problems, causes, effects, and solutions. WE CAN START BY SETTING THE EXAMPLE.

I agree that population is abig part in this but Taking public transit, the 3 R's (reduce, reuse, recycle), more energy efficient light bulbs and appliances, car pools, even 'Flicking Off' will help. Maybe not cure us completly but it will help with out a doubt.

I have read all of these complaint and yet no body has even come close to a solution. I've read about lighting and T.v.'s What about the garbage in homes or on the street I know when I'm walking down main street I stop to pick it up. What this site needs is ideas to reduce more then just energy usage. Walking more, don't buy Lights That don't safe energy, and If your kids can't turn out the lights then let them see what life would be like with out power, and ground them from there gaming systems. take the lights out of there rooms. it may sound harsh, but it works for my mother.

My Mexican family was harsh on their kids, but this way seems so much better :) Kids do need to learn to appreciate the things many of us take for granted. I'm seventeen, and have experienced many limitations due to poverty, being of a certain race, having a single parent, etc. So the world needs to have some clue as to the things they have that are privileges. We need more parents like this who are creative, and smart on the two-for-one deal.

SOME PEOPLE ARE JUST SO OBSESSED WITH THEIR HUMMERS AND PLASMA SCREEN TVS THAT THEY TOTALLY FORGET ABOU WHAT IT IS DOING TO OUR PLANTET AND ALL THE PEOPLE WE CARE ABOUT. LIKE WE WILL DIE IN ABOUT 10 YEARS IF WE DO NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT THIS AND I DUNNO ABOUT ALL YOU GUYS BUT I WANNA LIVE TILL IM 100 YEARS OLD. PLEASE HELP THE PLANET AND REDUCE YOUR EMISSIONS. FER ALL OF US.

What makes you think reducing CO2 emissions is going to make any difference? On what verified scientific data are you basing your 10 year deadline on? Why are plasma TV's bad (maybe they are much more eco-friendly than cathode ray tube TV's)? Minor climate variations are not going to prevent you from living to 100. Maybe we should be putting our resources into finding a cure for cancer instead of worrying about CO2.

Check out the other side of the story.
