What I can't understand is why someone has not offered a monstrous financial prize for the person or group that figures out how to contain a hydrogen fusion chain reaction and sustain that reaction. That complex (@this time) process is the solution to the worlds energy problems. Imagine a global economy based on hydrogen instead of oil. Imagine a world with no hydrocarbon pollution! Now wouldn't that be a better place to raise your kids!
The one thing that escapes me is why we are building a power source (nuclear) that once it is de-activated stays radioactive for thousands of generations? Besides that, what the hell do you do with the spent fuel? No no... I mean 100-200 years from now, or maybe 1000 years?
Or how about oil. We rape the earth trying to find it and then pollute the only place we have to call home by burning it, or turning it into plastic that lasts for untold eons. Man...the only species that deliberately poisons itself!
Nice gift to leave future generations.

I really really like what you're doing and support it 100% but immagine how much energy is used up by people looking at this website, like I know the information has to get out but there are better ways to do it. LIike an envorimental group came around to all the schools and talked and gave out brochures made of plant seeds that if you throw them out they'll just grow, which i thouht was really cool. Maybe you already have some public speaking groups going on somewhere that I don't know about but if you dont I think it'd be a great idea.
Dear whom recieves this,
Hi :) I'm Lauren. In grade 8. I wanted to ask some questions because I am doing a project on it ; Energy consumption in Canada. I would like to know how many blackouts have occured in the past 10 years?, how much energy is consume by a Canadian every year?, what other organizations are there that are against "overflow" of energy consumption, an average Canadian's energy bills, and what percent of Canadians actually turn off their lights when they aren't in use?
Thanks for your guidance,
Lauren
I posted this in the forum and didn't get much of a response (one person saying they have the same problem, and one saying it works fine, but not answering my question as to where to find it).
I go to the carbon calculator page, click the "proceed in English" button, and get a description and instructions, and that's it. No link, no calculator. What am I missing? I'm on a Mac and have tried it in both Safari and Firefox. I also started to try in IE, but the site wasn't legible due to it not displaying properly at all (elements overlapping, etc). I am having the same problem. I've tried multiple days on firefox, but I just can't figure it out. The display was also whacky on internet explorer. i'm using windows xp, so I don't know what is up.
Hey everyone! The carbon calculator links are back up and working just fine. Just follow the link on the top right of the FLICK OFF home page. Select English or French and then click the large calculator image at the top of the page. You'll be taken directly to the calculator. Enjoy! -the FLICK OFF team Switching to compact fluorescent bulbs can in some cases help the environment but an often overlooked fact is that switching to them is in many cases worsening global warming. Anyone who has seen a kid use an easy-bake oven knows that most of the energy released from a light bulb is heat.
People keep saying that this heat is wasted energy. Well it may be in Italy or Florida, but where I live in Canada, the time of year we use most of our light is also the time of year we need heat. But surely switching to CFLs means we use less energy and that has to be good, right? Well... no, actually. When its cold out and you produce less heat from your lighting you have to get it from somewhere else. If you have electrical heat then your electric radiators provide the replacement heat, so really you just end up switching the energy from one appliance to the other. You aren't actually harming the environment, but you aren't helping it any either. Now if your heat comes from oil or coal or natural gas (65% of Canadians) that's a different thing entirely. That means you are actually creating more greenhouse gases by switching to CFLs.
The lesson here really is that there are no blanket solutions. CFLs have a positive environmental impact in warm climates and a negative impact in cold ones. If your electricity comes from coal it means one thing - if from hydro or nuclear its another. You have to do the math.
So don't feel so bad about leaving your computer on if its snowing outside - if your heat is from fuel oil you are reducing your carbon footprint. And if you are thinking of switching to CFLs, and you live in the colder part of the hemisphere, only do it if your heat is electric or if the lamps are for outside. That way you won't be hurting the environment so much.
Although I am very happy that there are more and more organizations fighting for the cause of global warming, i must agree that for those that have not been exposed to the amount of information pertaining to the plight of the global environment, that your commercials are actually very uninspiring.
The recent commercial that puts to light different Canadian 'celebrities' preaching to us to help global warming and get off our asses is a little too hypocritical to me. Were talking about musicians and celebrities that probably consume 3 to 4 times more gas than us for their SUVs and security hummer squads. The amount of lighting and energy that is required for most of their shows, press events and 3-floor condos is really ridiculous. So to have them tell US to stop our consumption is laughable. If we really cared, the ideal quotas for energy consumption instilled throughout the world to actually make a change would really just affect most of these celebrities -- they should be the example, especially as young talented entrepreneurs. They should be the ones buying hybrid cars and using other forms of energy because they have the means to acquire these easily. this is by no means exempting regular people from doing their part -- i am just underlining the inappropriately chosen spokespeople for this organization.
It would be really important to highlight the urgency of this matter and that it can START with flicking off, but there is many more steps a person can take -- you should highlight these on your website and on television.
hey my name is kirsten and as i was watching your commerical and i was abit concern about the greenhouse, so i went to your website and read your information. well reading it i wanted ajax (where i live) to be part. well my question is how to get my high school&community to be part and help out?

Kaylah Harrison, Shannon Skidmore and Kristina Jones of Estevan, Saskatchewan jumped at the chance to volunteer at Flick Fest and sell some of our gear. Living in Estevan, they really understand the importance of balancing power production with environmentalism. And their help spreading the FLICK OFF message is just one of the reasons that Flick Fest was such a success. Thanks girls! To nominate your FLICKER of the Month Click Here!
